My recent post about genetics included the statistical fact that the illness of alcoholism and chemical dependency is highly genetically linked. An identical twin separated from it’s sibling at birth who developed alcoholism has a 70% chance of developing the illness. How can this be, and just what is inherited?
Five gene sites have been identified for this illness. These sites are more common in certain ethnic groups and family clusters. The physical traits are high tolerance for addictive substances and the pleasure centers in the limbic system over reacting to their intake. Behavioral traits include risk taking and pleasure seeking. A person doesn’t get as sick and it feels too good. This is combined with being surrounded by others who are using.
A person at genetic risk becomes addicted much more quickly. Recovery, the abstinence of all addictive substances, is the only way to avoid the life problems of the disease and premature death.
Addictions for centuries have been thought to be due to moral or psychological issues. Genetics is revealing the true nature of these illnesses and the way to protect at risk and afflicted persons.
